Car went in for an MOT. Initially I was told there was a brake imbalance, which was previously not tested for during an MOT (new rule). There was reluctance to give me any specific details. Finally I was told that it was the rear brakes and that the OS was greater than the NS. I told the mechanic this was strange since the drums, brake shoes, cylinders and adjusters were all brand new (within 4 weeks). When asked if they could suggest a solution the mechanic shrugged his shoulders and recommended using the adjusters to bring the NS shoes closer to the drum. At the time I was doubtful about this solution as I would of expected the braking efficiency to be independent of this adjustment as it is applied through the hydraulics (the only result to reduce the play in the handbrake cable) When I got home I checked the failures on the form and found 2 others that they neglected to mention. I booked in for a retest and a tracking check on the 23rd . The 2 other failure points were fixed and I took the drum of the NS and did the adjustment recommended (also cleaning out any dust). I returned the vehicle and was told the work would be completed in an hour and a half. When I returned I was told that the tracking machine had not been charged (?) and that they would be another hour (which turned out to be an hour and a quarter). It failed again on rear brake imbalance with almost identical readings to the previous ones, so the suggestion did nothing apart from take a small amount of slack out of my handbrake cable. In frustration I checked the Internet and found the forum comments, which details significant issues with this new part of the test. I also took the car to another garage who failed it on 2 other counts (which I fully accept, but were not picked up by Naze Lane Garage), but who were happy that there was not an imbalance and without details from me, confirmed the comments in the above document. Garage Response: The vehicle was presented for MOT and tested by D Collinson and the vehicle failed on brake imbalance when the brake readings were inputted into the VOSA computer. The customer took the vehicle away and carried out repairs himself. The vehicle was presented for MOT retest and tested by P Collinson and the vehicle failed on brake imbalance when the brake readings were inputted into the VOSA computer. The brake readings were exactly the same on both tests.
